It is a good idea to review the award document with the PI. This action is not only a courtesy, but it is also “another set of interested eyes” that may find something that does not seem to be consistent with the institutional understanding of the award. Research administrators should be pro-active in this review and note down any perceived discrepancies to discuss with the sponsor. Many times, everything is perfect. However, it is the time when the award document is not closely reviewed when problems can arise. Remember, once the award is accepted and established at the institution, it is difficult to change with the sponsor.
