Award Documents vary by sponsor. Today many award documents come to sponsored programs offices electronically. Most Federal agencies, however, continue to use surface mail paper documents known as Notification of Award or by a similar title. It is important for research administrators to review the Federal agency’s award number and to verify that the project period and the award amount is consistent with what is in the proposal file.

Some award documents are purchase orders. These are used for contracts in some cases. At other times a check might show up. This is an award document. Moreover, subgrants mark a further type of award document.

But the award letter remains the typical kind of award document.
