Research Administrators originally were the direct assistants of the researcher. Often drawn from the ranks of former military, they understood the complexities of federal bureaucracy and were able to manage the single or multiple awards that their respective researcher received. As the profession grew more varied and recipient organizations changed from primary research universities to the variety of organizations now receiving federal awards, the character traits of the research administrator likewise evolved. Today’s RA is a combination of accountant, visionary, meticulous record keeper, diplomat and technology genius. Each segment of the profession attracts those with specific specialties reflecting the focus of their task.
