Research in its many varied facets is conducted in a broad variety of settings.  Universities, industry, non-profit and for-profit organizations and institutes and federal and state agencies may conduct research.  Internationally there has been a significant increase in research productivity by much the same mix of organizations.  In the United States higher education arena the research mission has been carefully quantified.  Institutions are identified by their commitment to research and by their research output.  Comprehensive universities may conduct research on a limited scale; research-intensive institutions may evidence focused programs of research within their greater teaching mission; research-extensive institutions conduct research in all disciplines and in a variety of centers and institutes!
